 Information for Interns

Our local chapter provides many services to interns while they are in the Blacksburg area. These efforts are coordinated by our Reception Coordinator (RC). For the name and contact info of our current RC, check the Officers page. (If their email address is not listed, try searching for it using the "Search for VT People" box on the Virginia Tech home page.)

Some of the responsibilities of the RC that are pertinent to incoming interns include:

  • The RC receives the inbound interns' contact information from the National Job-Raising Coordinator, and contacts both the interns and their employers in April or May, prior to their arrival, to confirm the arrangements that have been made for the interns.
  • The RC coordinates students to meet the interns at the airport and take them to their lodging, and to accompany them to work on their first day. They may also arrange a brief tour of Blacksburg and the VT campus.
  • The RC coordinates interns' lodging (usually by arranging for an apartment and roommates).
  • The RC coordinates setting up bank accounts, obtaining Social Security cards, and other necessary activities.
  • The RC (or Social Chair) organizes social activities for the interns during their stay so that they can meet American students and other interns. Some possible activities include meals together at the dining halls on campus, weekend hikes in the beautiful New River Valley area, and a (tentative) trip to the beach in North Carolina, along with the NC State chapter of IAESTE and their visiting interns.

Here are some useful links for incoming interns to find useful information about the Blacksburg area.
